The Silk Cut Award for Linocut Prints is one of the most important printmaking awards in Australia. The Award commenced in 1995 to encourage the making and appreciation of linocut prints. The existence of the award has led to many visual artists working in the medium and producing some extraordinary and imaginative work.

The Award aims to provide creative opportunities for artists of all ages, and a vital part of the award is its special category for students, the only national print award to do so.

In previous years the Award has been a biennial event, but commencing in 2008, the Award will be held annually.

The Silk Cut Foundation Inc has ensured that generations of Australians will have access to high quality linocut prints by donating purchased Silk Cut Linocut Award entries, from both the student and open artist sections, to the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra.

The name Silk Cut reflects the versatile and effortless handling qualities of this natural linoleum product. The Silk Cut Award is wholly sponsored by the Silk Cut Foundation Inc in conjunction with Forbo of Holland, the world's largest manufacturer of linoleum.
